Calls for substitutes threaten America's most successful export, the greenback. Is the Floating Dollar Sunk?

by admin Posted in RSS Marketing

In theory, floating exchange rates were supposed to allow economies to reduce trade deficits by letting the currency adjust. A weaker exchange rate would drive up the cost of imports and make exports more competitive, thus reducing deficits. Under fixed exchange rates, the economy would have to be constricted to eliminate imbalances, reducing imports and lowering prices to make exports more competitive. That's a more painful process than the seemingly benign adjustment of the exchange rate to bring things into balance.

That's what the textbooks said anyway. The reality has been more complicated.

It's the flow of money that dominates the flow of goods, not the other way around. Governments, moreover, manipulate the quantity or the value of money to their ends, which is also outside the textbook model.

The rest of the world holds dollars as investments. Foreign central banks use dollars predominantly for their reserves. Dollar-based financial markets are the deepest and biggest in the world. In other words, the liabilities of the U.S. are the main assets of the rest of the world.

This has conferred on the U.S. something that King Midas couldn't imagine. We can effectively print dollars and the rest of the world takes them. Imagine what you'd do with a money-printing press in your basement. You'd spend like crazy on stuff. Or you'd acquire real assets, such as houses.

Extend that notion globally. Since the rest of the world takes our paper money, we get to acquire their products or assets in exchange. As a result, America can spend more than it earns and save less than it invests. The difference is made up by foreigners accepting our dollars and lending them back to us.

The clearest example is China. Its massive trade surplus with the U.S. gives it boatloads of greenbacks. The textbook says that would make its currency, the yuan, rise, which would make Chinese exports dearer in world markets. That's the last thing Beijing wants as it tries to keep the economy growing at 8% to provide jobs and maintain social stability.

So, China's central bank accumulates billions and billions of dollars, which it invests in U.S. securities. Much of that money went into Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac securities, which in turn helped finance the U.S. housing boom. But the bulk of China's dollars went into U.S. Treasury securities, which helps fund the budget deficit.

Americans should realize that the nation's most successful export isn't Coke or Boeing airliners or Microsoft software or even Hollywood films. It's the dollar, which is accepted around the world as a store of value.

Under the current floating exchange-rate system, the U.S. wasn't limited by the gold in Fort Knox as to how many dollars it could issue. It was limited only by the willingness of the rest of the world to accept greenbacks in payment for their goods and services.

But, for the first time since the early 1970s, America runs the risk of being constrained by international considerations. Nixon could get around them simply by abrogating the promise to maintain the dollar's value in gold. Now, America's main creditors could impose the discipline on the U.S. that gold couldn't.

Poll: Agree or Disagree?

Very good BUT you left out that the party which lost power now believes that its route back to power is to sink the US economy so they can say "I told you so" and get their people elected again. Yes, the economy is rough but we have now a group of leaders who truly want to solve the economic problems not just blame others for what they created.

Well, there goes the dumb blond stereotype!

by admin Posted in Email Marketing

I want to email thousands of my subscribers every month but ISP limitations means that I have to find a commercial software with its own email server so as to not to contravene ISP rules.

You might want to visit this blog. It has a store which might sell the kind of software you are looking for. Good luck!

Which is a better marketing tool: a Free Chapter or an audio clip of the book?

by admin Posted in Book Marketing

Which is a better marketing tool for a new book:
a free chapter from the book, or an audio clip download of the chapter they can listen to on a website?

Which leaves one with a better feeling about the book, overall?

Thanks

There's no clear answer to this, since it depends on genre, writing style, and audience. Be wise and do both.

Is it important for (unsigned) bands to put music videos on websites such as Youtube?

by admin Posted in Youtube Marketing

conducting some market research (due in 2 days!)
alternate questions you might like to answer:
do you ever watch band videos on the internet and if so, have you ever downloaded/bought music after having watched it?

not nessicarily - they dont have to have videos they can just make a website and then upload MP3 files or send off some of their tracks to record artists.. it depends if you want a record contact i guess.
and umumum
and not really, you'll listen to the music to determien whether or not you want to buy the music - u wouldnt buy the piece of music if it was an awful song but an amazing video. at the end of the day you're listening to the music not the video.

What is the best way to quickly and cost-effectively market a widget on MySpace?

by admin Posted in MySpace Marketing

We have a widget for MySpace users and are looking to get it out into the MySpace crowd. My hunch is that general advertising through MySpace is probably not going to be cost-effective. We have already built our own page (www.myspace.com/jaxtrme) and are doing some bulletins and commenting. Is there something more scalable that is legit? Does anybody have a network of commenters and bulletin posters that can do some of the legwork in a fast and cost-effective manner? I've seen sites like www.bulletinboost.com, but am not sure how legitimate they are. It's not clear you even know the messages got delivered. And if they send bulletins to people who don't know them, my guess is that they don't get a good response. And the last thing we want is to come to the attention of MySpace as a spammer. I'm open to any and all advice–especially for people who have tried various ways of promoting "bottom-up" on MySpace.

Maybe seek advertising from large myspace layout and comment sites, like pimpmyspace.org. They have a lot of content, so they get a lot of hits from the myspacers. I'm sure it wont be too expensive or hard to convince them to run a flashy banner on thier site. Do a google or yahoo search for myspace layouts and see what top sites come up and try to get with them.

If you can try to nail them down on site unique visits per month/day etc, especially if you will be paying for advertising. Ask if you can see the statistics for yourself (if they use google analytics they can set you up to view it)

What sort of women would I meet on Facebook?

by admin Posted in Facebook Marketing

My brother is re-entering the cattle-market and looking for a new relationship. He's dating women that he meets on Facebook.

For a 34 year old, is this a good idea? What sort of women are going to be on Facebook?

I reckon it's just going to be single mums and grannies. He reckons not.

It may not be a great way and I think that wether age you are, facebook is free and people may just be in it for a laugh, if he signed up for a dating site that has a fee he might meet more gueniune women.

What is meant by 'viral' in the phrase, "viral marketing idea…"?

by admin Posted in Viral Marketing

"Viral" means spreading very quickly through many different channels through word of mouth or proper link placement.

Usually the best viral videos are the ones that come across our emails everyday from a friend or a family member. It might be a cute 30 second video of a baby doing something funny, or the latest goof-up by a celebrity.

These can get millions of hits in one day. Many of these videos are placed strategically by companies to sometimes create a stir about a topic and release a product that has some correlation.

Successful viral marketing can be very lucrative. You have to be very creative and again, have strategic placement to really see good results.

How come todays internet company dont have IPOs?

by admin Posted in Web 2.0 Marketing

I remember back in 90s tech boom all the internet companys were going public on the stock market. How come the current web 2.0 companys like digg, facebook etc. arent doing the same?

As it stands right now they are working to create value in their companies for themselves and they are doing well and expanding. Once a private company does an IPO then they get that influx in immediate capital, but their success and expansion now goes to profit others depending on what percentage of their share base that they decided to hang onto for themselves. If they find that they want to make a move in the future to expand or absorb another company, then they may have an IPO in order to pull capital out of their equitable value on the stock market then they might.
